Supt. Larry Snelling
Former Superintendent, Chicago Police Department
Larry B. Snelling is the former Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department, where he concluded more than three decades of service in July 2026. A lifelong Chicagoan raised on the city's South Side, Snelling joined the Chicago Police Department in 1992 as a patrol officer in his home community of Englewood and rose through the ranks, serving as sergeant, lieutenant, commander, deputy chief, and Chief of the Bureau of Counterterrorism before becoming Superintendent in 2023. Throughout his career, he has been recognized for his expertise in police training, constitutional policing, use of force, community engagement, and public safety. Snelling helped redesign the department's force-training model around national best practices and has served as an expert in federal use-of-force cases. As Superintendent, his leadership emphasized reducing violent crime, strengthening community trust, officer training and wellness, and improving public safety throughout Chicago. He is a graduate of Chicago Public Schools and holds a bachelor's degree in adult education from DePaul University.
